Should one avoid eating sour or bitter foods on Rosh Hashanah?

Synopsis

The Mishnah Berurah reports that some refrain from cooking sour foods (like borscht) on Rosh Hashanah, and that fish eaten as a siman should not be cooked in vinegar. The Aruch HaShulchan records the custom not to dip in vinegar or eat sour or bitter things on the first night, but exempts spices like pepper that enhance food.
