Should one refrain from eating nuts (egozim) on Rosh Hashanah?

Synopsis

The Rema records that some are careful not to eat nuts because 'egoz' in gematria equals 'chet' (sin), and because they cause excess phlegm and saliva which disrupts prayer. The Magen Avraham distinguishes between large nuts (egozim) and small nuts (luzim) and says both are prohibited according to the second reason. The Aruch HaShulchan adds that any food causing phlegm should be avoided.
