When one can only afford either tefillin or a mezuzah, which takes precedence?
Synopsis
The Mechaber rules tefillin take precedence. The Magen Avraham and Mishnah Berurah add that in current times, when tefillin can be borrowed, a mezuzah (which cannot be borrowed) takes precedence. The Beur HaGra cites the Yerushalmi dispute between Shmuel (mezuzah first) and Rav Huna (tefillin first), ruling like Rav Huna.
