Does the left/right orientation of the tefillin compartments follow the wearer's left/right, or the general convention — and does this change for a left-handed person (iter)?

Synopsis

The Magen Avraham and Mishnah Berurah rule that even for a left-handed person (iter), the orientation of the compartments follows the general (normative) left and right, not the individual's dominant side, because the Talmud's reasoning is that the order should be readable in sequence by someone facing the wearer.
