If one arrives at synagogue and finds the congregation has already recited Shema and is about to begin the Amidah, should one pray the Amidah with them first and recite Shema afterward, or recite Shema first to maintain the order?
Synopsis
The Mechaber rules one prays the Amidah with the congregation first and then recites Shema with its blessings. The Mishnah Berurah explains this is because congregational prayer supersedes the mitzvah of connecting Geulah to the Amidah at Maariv. The GRA notes that at Shacharit the rule is different because the Amidah is obligatory, while Maariv is voluntary.
