Can wool or linen tzitzit strings exempt garments made of other materials (e.g., silk, cotton)?

Synopsis

The Mechaber rules that wool and linen tzitzit strings exempt all garment types. Garments of other materials can only be exempted by tzitzit strings of their own kind. The Aruch HaShulchan and Mishnah Berurah elaborate that if the garment is wool/linen-mixed, only wool (or linen in extremis) can serve.
