How often must tefillin that have been verified as valid be checked?
Synopsis
Tefillin with an established chazakah (presumption of validity) need never be re-checked as long as their covering is intact. Tefillin worn only occasionally must be checked twice in a seven-year cycle. The Rema rules that if no one is available to both check and re-stitch them, they may be worn without checking. The Aruch HaShulchan adds that modern ink conditions require periodic checking even for regularly worn tefillin.
