May one pledge (use as collateral) or deposit a tallit with tzitzit with a non-Jew?

Synopsis

Pledging or depositing a tallit with tzitzit with a non-Jew is forbidden, unless it is temporary. The same concerns (murder, harlot) apply as for outright sale. Whether the prohibition on collateral still applies today depends on which rationale one accepts.
