May a blind person serve as chazzan?

PrayerShaliach Tzibur

Synopsis

The Mechaber permits a blind person to lead services, provided he does not read Torah aloud by heart. The Magen Avraham confirms blindness does not affect the obligation to fulfill mitzvot. The Chovat Yair restricts this for the High Holy Days; the Eliyahu Rabbah disagrees.
