How is the Shabbat boundary measured for a city that is circular, triangular, or has many sides?

ShabbatEruvin & Tehumin

Synopsis

A non-rectangular city is inscribed within a rectangle aligned to the cardinal directions, and the 2000-amah boundary is measured from the sides of that rectangle. This allows residents to 'gain' the corners — the space between the rectangle and the actual city shape counts as part of the city.
