What is the status of a Jewish apostate (mumar) to idolatry or public Shabbat desecration for eruv purposes?
Synopsis
A Jew who has become an apostate to idolatry or who publicly desecrates Shabbat — even only rabbinically — is treated as a non-Jew for eruv purposes and requires rental. If he violates only in private, even Torah-level violations, he retains Jewish status for eruv.
