Must the lower Yud of the Alef (and similarly the upper Yud and other letter components) be present for the letter to be valid, and does the right vs. left spine of a Yud have different legal status?
Synopsis
The spines (kotzin) of letters are debated: R' Tam holds the right spine of the Yud (its right foot) is essential and its absence invalidates; the left spine is not essential and may be corrected after the fact. Rashi disagrees and holds the letter is valid even without the right spine (kotz), though l'chatchila it is required.
