May one go out on Erev Shabbat close to dark holding a needle or quill pen in one's hand?
Synopsis
The Mechaber forbids going out close to dark holding a needle or quill pen lest one forget and carry them on Shabbat. The Aruch HaShulchan explains the theoretical basis: if one forgets the object (but remembers Shabbat), the violation is not Torah-level; but there is concern one will forget about the object until night and then forget it is Shabbat. The Biur Halacha addresses whether 'in hand' vs. 'attached to clothing' makes a difference.
