May one spread traps for animals, birds, or fish on Erev Shabbat that will trap them on Shabbat?
Synopsis
The Mechaber and all authorities permit setting traps on Erev Shabbat even though the animal will be caught on Shabbat, since the trapping occurs passively. The Mishnah Berurah notes that setting a trap on Shabbat itself when an animal enters at the moment of spreading would be a Torah-level violation of tzedah (trapping).
