What constitutes a 'dirty place' (makom metu'naf) that requires handwashing?

PrayerPreparation for Prayer

Synopsis

The Mechaber defines dirty places as covered areas of the body with perspiration residue. Scratching the head also creates this status. The Rema adds that ear wax and nose mucus are in this category. The Taz defines the arm to the elbow as 'exposed'; above that as 'covered'. The Aruch HaShulchan distinguishes between different insects and types of sweat-related touching, and rules that touching one's beard or sidelocks requires no washing.
