How far inside the synagogue must one go before beginning to pray?

The Mechaber rules one must enter the distance of two doorways (eight handbreadths) before praying. He provides three interpretations for why, and rules one should be strict for all three. The Magen Avraham notes that the custom to build a vestibule (achsadra) follows the Tur's view.
