Is it forbidden to pray behind a synagogue without facing it?

PrayerSynagogue

Synopsis

The Mechaber rules it is forbidden to pray behind the synagogue (i.e., on the entrance side) without turning to face it. He notes a dispute about which side constitutes 'behind,' and rules that one should be strict on all exterior sides. The Rema adds that praying in an attached house facing Jerusalem is permitted.
