Is an onen (mourner whose relative died) obligated to recite Shema and pray?

PrayerFasts & MourningAninus

Synopsis

An onen — one whose relative died and whom he is required to mourn — is exempt from Shema and Tefilla even if someone else is handling the burial. He may not be strict with himself and recite Shema unless someone else is actively handling the burial needs, in which case we do not protest if he wishes to recite.
