Should pieces of chametz be placed before the search so the searcher will find them?
Synopsis
The Rema records the Ashkenazi custom to place small pieces of chametz where the searcher will find them, so the blessing will not be in vain. The Mishnah Berurah and other authorities rule that not placing them does not invalidate the search or the blessing, since the blessing covers the entire mitzvah of bi'ur. The Arizal endorsed the custom of placing ten pieces.
