Should one stand or sit while reciting Kiddush, and what about during Vayechulu?

ShabbatKiddush

Synopsis

The Mechaber rules Vayechulu is said standing and then Kiddush follows. The Rema says it is better to sit for Kiddush (and custom is to sit even for Vayechulu), though one stands briefly at the beginning for 'Yom HaShishi' since its initial letters spell God's name. The Gra agrees sitting is preferable because it establishes the group as a fixed unit (kevi'ut).
