If one's meal extends into Shabbat before Birkat HaMazon, should one first say Birkat HaMazon and then Kiddush, or first Kiddush and then continue the meal?

ShabbatKiddush

Synopsis

The Mechaber presents two approaches: (1) say Birkat HaMazon on one cup then Kiddush on a second, mentioning Shabbat in Birkat HaMazon; (2) spread a cloth, make Kiddush, eat a bit, then say Birkat HaMazon. The Rema rules the custom follows the second approach to avoid disputes arising from the first.
