What are the Torah readings for Shemini Atzeret / Simchat Torah in Eretz Yisrael versus Chutz La'Aretz?
Synopsis
In Eretz Yisrael (one day), three sifrei Torah are used: 'V'zot HaBracha' to the end of the Torah, then Bereishit through 'asher bara Elokim la'asot,' and the maftir reads 'bayom hashemini atzeret.' In Chutz La'Aretz on the first day (Shemini Atzeret), only two sifrei Torah are used: five aliyot from 'kol habechor' (or 'aser te'aser' per Ashkenazi custom), and the maftir reads 'bayom hashemini atzeret.'
