May one soak asafetida (chiltit) on Shabbat?
Synopsis
The Mechaber forbids soaking asafetida in lukewarm or cold water because soaking it is the medicinal method. However, one may place it in vinegar and dip bread in it. If soaked since the previous day, one may drink it on Shabbat. If one has been drinking it for consecutive days and must continue on Shabbat, it is permitted due to health danger.
