May one insert wax, thick oil, or other materials into a barrel hole to stop it up on Shabbat?
Synopsis
Wax and thick oil are forbidden due to smoothing (memareah); other materials are generally permitted when wine is not actively flowing. When wine is actively escaping, even non-wax stoppers are forbidden. The Rambam forbids all stopping of holes; the Mechaber follows the Beit Yosef position.
