R' Meir Simcha HaKohen of Dvinsk
R' Meir Simcha HaKohen (1843-1926) was a prominent Ashkenazi halakhic authority and rosh yeshiva of Dvinsk (Daugavpils), Latvia, who served as a leading figure in East European Jewish scholarship during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for his two major works: the Ohr Sameach, a comprehensive commentary on the Rambam's Mishneh Torah, and the Meshech Chokhma, a supercommentary on the Torah combining legal and philosophical insights. His contributions to halakhic methodology and his synthesis of Talmudic, Maimonidean, and philosophical thought made him an influential authority whose rulings and writings continue to be widely studied and cited in contemporary Jewish legal scholarship.
